Our Research Focus
We are fascinated by the beautiful structure of flagella & cilia and their ability to generate movement. Powering the locomotion of sperm cells, algae, parasites, and many other cell types, flagella & cilia are considered the largest eukaryotic machines! We use biochemistry, genetics, and especially structural biology to look inside flagella and cilia with the overall goal of figuring out how these machines work. Understanding flagella & cilia movement could facilitate the generation of fertility treatments, contraceptives, preventatives or treatments for parasitic infections, and the design of efficient micro swimmers.
